WWW,
September 2005 - In the 1990's,
Propellerhead Software introduced a perfect
simulation of two Drum Computers and two
monophonic Synthesizers. The program was
called "Rebirth", and with reason!
Originally,
these devices were made by the Roland
Corporation in the 1980's and no longer
available. Ironically, the sounds became the
standard for a whole new style of music. So
everyone was looking for a real Roland TR
808 Drum Computer. And the prices for these
instruments went sky-high!
Needless to
say, that REBIRTH was a great success.
Complete tracks were created with the
program, and these tracks were hits in the
dances!
Needless to
say, that REBIRTH gave the user
possibilities that went beyond those of the
much sought-after hardware. Thanks to the
Rewire software, it could even be linked to
sequencers!
Now this
great piece of software has been
"discontinued" by their developers
in september 2005. It's no longer possible
to buy the software.
The reason
for that is "Reason". That is the
follow-up for Rebirth which has become a
complete software studio that will enable
the user to create DUB music (See
the in-depth Dubroom Reason 3.0 Review).
Anyway...
Rebirth
Discontued? Great news for the contemporary
computer based DUB Producer!
How can
that be good news?
Well, that
answer is given kind of quickly too.
Propellerhead Software has decided to give
away the software for free now!
They have
started a website called "Rebirth
Museum". It's a static website, meaning
that there's not much happening. But after
registering, you can dowloand the complete
instalation CD ROM and install a full
working version of REBIRTH on your computer.
Sure, it
will give Propellerhead a good name. But so
it should, because time after time after
time they proof themselves to be real
contributors of real development of digital
music production.
With the
REBIRTH Software, you can make some real
nice drum and basslines. No, the software
will not enable you to make crucial DUB
music. There's only two effects (echo and
distortion), and it's impossible to play
chords (the synthesizers are monophonic).
The
software however does contain two fully
working drum computers and two fully working
monophonic synthesizers. It also contains
the "official" TR 808
sounds, as acknowledged by Roland Corp.
A BIG UP to
Propellerhead!
